Patty Wagon
Buying a Commander is not like any other boat purchase. First, one must find a Commander. Because of their age, superior construction and timeless design, their growing popularity is making this more difficult, much like looking for a classic automobile. Second, one must be prepared for finding them in a variety of conditions, from pristine to woefully neglected. Again, much like finding a classic car. But when a Commander is found, in whatever condition, it is seen by seasoned Commander Club members (often referred to as "Commanderos") as a jewel. A Commander aficionado can look past the neglect, the dirt, the scrapes, the pitted chrome, the weathered toerails, and see a diamond in the rough.
But, underneath the grit and grime, there is a yacht much like the one shown below ("Patty Wagon"). Dick and Patty's goal was NEVER to perform a quick, half-hearted cover-up, but to spend many years completing a full restoration project, bringing this motor yacht back to the classic beauty they knew lied beneath.
"Patty Wagon" offers inspiration to all of us who own these prized classics, and I offer a few glimpses of her attributes!

The photos above and below are a stunning example of a 1969 38' Commander Sedan, better known as "Patty Wagon". This boat is owned by fellow club members Dick and Patty Morland. ( photo credits: Alarik vonHofsten, Lee Dahlen)

Along with the original tachs, Dick has fashioned visual alarms for many of the systems aboard Patty Wagon, including bilge pump alarms. |
|
Dick has fashioned a number of additional devices to compliment those installed by the manufacturer. This ensures visual awareness to all onboard systems while at the dock and underway.

Patty Wagon gets where she's going by way of these finely-tuned Ford 427's. Dick is an avid engine guru, and spares no expense or amount of time treating these engines to the best in care and parts. Below: Interior Shots of Patty Wagon

They say boating is an insanity that cannot be cured. Well, I offer the below pictures as testament, and as Dick says " between my Goldies, Sasha, who went home to heaven after years aboard Patty Wagon and Queenie, who is just now getting her feet wet, and restoring my boat I've had alot of practice at Martini making!
