And definitely tends to add up in excess wiring. The picture below is a result of roughly 9.5 hours of tracing and pulling wires, on a 1969 42' Chris Craft restoration project one at a time!
It is important to note that the pile of wiring I am holding below is strictly wiring that HAD NO PURPOSE. Meaning it either was disconnected on one or both ends. It is truly amazing what can add up over the years. Needless to say my customer was as hard at work with me on this job as it takes two people yelling back and forth and working together to accomplish this feat in a full day of work.
Once we are at a "base line" for the restoration, we can then begin with making sure the wire is in good condition, wire brush all connections before assembly, thereby reducing the chance of an intermittent circuit,
then once the electrical connection is made, the connection must be weatherproofed to avoid failure in the future. This is generally accomplished one of three ways. Heat shrink, liquid electrical tape, or ScotchKote brand sealer by 3M.
Once completed, dressed and organized, We then make sure that only solid wire is below water lines. Any connections we make, or fuse holders we install are sure to be mounted high in the room to insure minimal chance of exposure to water, as well as making it easier to service should the need arise.
Only then can we can give you the quality product that you require with a sense of security in knowing that when it was assembled, it was done correctly, with care, and needs only minimal maintenance and care to be reliable from now on.
